There are few things in life I appreciate more than an interesting smell, a good stretch of beach and the opportunity to return home absolutely filthy.
Fortunately, Altona Dog Beach and PA Burns Reserve deliver all three.
I'm Theodore, Hound Hero's resident hound and self-appointed Chief Park Inspector. Today, I'm reviewing one of our favourite local combinations: a year-round dog-friendly beach and a fully fenced dog park right next door.
Frankly, it's an excellent arrangement. Whoever decided to put these two together deserves a biscuit.

Altona Dog Beach: A Hound's Coastal Paradise
At low tide, Altona Dog Beach reveals a glorious expanse of sand and shallow water.
For the more athletic members of our pack, this means running, paddling and retrieving balls.
For me, it means investigating everything the tide has deposited, examining suspicious-looking seaweed and occasionally standing perfectly still while contemplating a particularly compelling scent.
My humans call this enrichment.
I call it important work.
One of the things I love about Altona Dog Beach is that every visit is different. The tides change, the smells change, and sometimes the entire beach appears to have rearranged itself overnight.
A word of caution from management: the beach isn't fenced, so it's best suited to dogs who can be safely managed in an open coastal environment.
PA Burns Reserve: For Dogs Who Prefer Boundaries
Immediately beside the beach is PA Burns Reserve, home to a fully fenced off-leash dog park.
The park features two enclosed areas, double-gated entrances and grassy space for running, exploring and socialising.
This makes it an excellent alternative when the beach isn't suitable for the dogs attending.
Personally, I find the fencing somewhat restrictive to my ambitions. Mike, however, insists that knowing where I am at all times is a reasonable expectation.
We have agreed to disagree.
What Humans Should Know Before Visiting
A few recommendations from my extensive fieldwork:
Check the tides. The beach changes significantly between high and low tide.
Bring drinking water. Saltwater is for paddling, not hydration.
Pack towels. More than you think you'll need.
Watch the weather. Coastal wind can turn a pleasant outing into a rather dramatic affair.
Supervise social interactions. Even a lovely dog park isn't necessarily the right environment for every dog.
And remember, a fenced dog park isn't a substitute for supervision.
Management was particularly insistent that I include that last point.

Five paws out of five.
Altona Dog Beach and PA Burns Reserve are among my favourite destinations in Melbourne's west.
There's variety, room to explore, excellent sniffing opportunities and the possibility of getting sand into places my humans would prefer I didn't.
For Hound Hero, this combination is particularly valuable because we can choose the most appropriate environment for the dogs in our care.
